‘Best field’ set for Oasis Championship on The Old Course at Broken Sound
Many of golf’s greatest all-time players will tee it up Friday, Saturday and Sunday on The Old Course at Broken Sound in Boca Raton.
The first full-field event of the PGA Tour Champions season, the Oasis Championship, will include Boca Raton resident Bernhard Langer, a 38-time winner on this tour – 10 of which were major titles.
Langer, who was the 1985 and 1993 Masters champion, has earned $26,941,504 since joining the PGA Tour Champions in 2007. And, he has a record five Charles Schwab Cup trophies to his credit for winning the season-long points race.
Langer won this event in a 2010 playoff against John Cook, when he chipped in out of the bunker for eagle on the first extra hole.
Also committed to the 54-hole tournament are 16 other former PGA major champions – defending Oasis champion Mark Calcavecchia, Darren Clarke, Fred Couples, John Daly, Retief Goosen, Tom Lehman, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Corey Pavin, Jeff Sluman, Hal Sutton, David Toms and Ian Woosnam.
Tournament director Eddie Carbone said, “this is the best field the Oasis Championship has ever had … they all want to be in Boca Raton in February.”
It was Calcavecchia who outlasted Langer in the 2018 event, to win by two shots with a 16-under 200 – his fourth PGA Tour Champions victory.
“I hit it well, made enough putts and sometimes the good Lord just pencils you in,” Calcavecchia said. “That week was just meant to be for some reason.”
Other past champions in the field are Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Esteban Toledo, Michael Allen, Paul Goydos, Scott Hoch, Lehman and Pavin.
Daly, playing on a sponsor’s exemption, said he looks forward to playing The Old Course.
“It’s a course where I can play aggressively,” Daly said. “I can reach most of the par-5s and there’s a par-4 (7th hole) that is very reachable.”
Goosen, who will be inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame in June, will be making his PGA Tour Champions debut while trying to add to his 33 worldwide wins – which includes two U.S. Open titles.
“I know I’m going to have a blast,” Goosen said. “I’ve been thinking about playing on this tour for a long time.”
Others joining Goosen in making their first start on the PGA Tour Champions are Chris DiMarco, Ken Duke and Gary Nicklaus.
Nickalus, the son of arguably the game’s greatest player – Jack Nicklaus, competed in 122 PGA Tour events before regaining his amateur status in 2007.
“I feel like my game is better than when I was on the regular tour,” Nickalus said. “When you are on the tour, you’re grinding every day to keep your card, so it’s hard to work on your game.
“My game was immature. On a good day, I shot a good score. On a bad day, I shot a bad score. You need to be able to shoot a good score when you’re not playing well. When I took time off after becoming an amateur, it’s like my game matured.”
All three rounds of the tournament will be televised on The Golf Channel.
