Big crowd, good weather expected for inaugural GumboFest
The gumbo is cooking.
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton is set to host its inaugural GumboFest from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday at Red Reef Park – 1400 N. Ocean Blvd., Boca Raton.
Brandon Canute is the Development Manager for Friends of Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, the organizing group behind the event.
Canute said Friday he is looking forward to a big turnout.
“We sure have appreciated the community’s response to our event, so far,” Canute said. “We are trying a new spin on fundraising with GumboFest – because it doesn’t always have to be a gala event to raise money.
“We hope the community will come out and enjoy themselves, plus support the local businesses who are behind our efforts.”
Weather Saturday is expected to be partly sunny and temperatures in the upper 80s – with only a slight chance of a passing shower.
As the title would indicate, servings of gumbo soup will be the highlight of the day.
A total of eight chefs are entered, with a goal of being named: “Grand Gumbo Master of South Florida.”
Those chefs who will be cooking include:
– Deanza Hodge, Dubliner Irish Pub
– Nancy Short, Nancy’s Cajon Cooking
– Ray Dolan, Boca Resort & Beach Club
– Jeff Vincent, Funky Buddha Brewery
– Amy Mandile, Henry’s of Delray
Four judges will have the task of deciding just which gumbo is the best. Gordon Gilbert, Joseph Cooper, Dr. Samantha Danchuk and Steve Abrams are the judges.
Besides the main course, other food will be available.
Funky Buddha Brewery’s draft van will be present serving beer, and St. Augustine Distillery will offer a gin and hibiscus spritz – to those 21 years of age and older.
Non-alcoholic drinks will also be available.
There will be live music and games for children.
