Coastal cleanup scheduled for Sept. 21 at three area Boca Raton parks
Here’s your chance to help clean up Boca Raton’s beaches.
The annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) will take place Saturday, Sept. 21 at three parks in Boca Raton – South Inlet, Spanish River and Red Reef.
The cleanup is part of an international effort to rid the marine environment of trash.
It is the world’s largest, single-day volunteer commitment to clean up coastal areas. There will be volunteers from more than 100 countries taking part in the effort to pick up trash along beaches, canals, lakes and rivers.
The Ocean Conservancy is the overriding sponsor for this event and has been for the past 33 years. The Ocean Conservancy is the world’s largest organization that focuses on the health of the marine environment.
International Coastal Cleanup personnel will provide detailed/standardized paper data cards for the cleanup or volunteers can electronically track the trash they pick up on the ‘Clean Swell’ app.
Volunteer information on the type and sources of trash picked up is analyzed/tracked yearly. This data influences public policy and behavioral change on the part individuals and the communities they live in.
The data is used to:
- Raise awareness of the quantities and types of marine debris
- Determines the various sources of marine debris
- Evaluates the impact of trash on wildlife and habitat
- Assists in the enforcement of regulations against illegal dumping
- Influences industries that manufacture products that cause harm to the environment
Participants in the Boca Raton cleanups will receive free T-shirts – while supplies last.
Volunteers should pre-register by contacting the coordinator at either of the three parks, who can also answer site specific questions.
